S[?] Bridge June 9th 1880
My dear Friend:
Your letter came
to hand yesterday and
I was very glad to hear
from you, but I am
sorry you could not
find “ [?] book.”
And neither can
we get the “[L___?]”
anywhere. I use to tease
[?] but [?] [?]
away and never brought
it back. Mrs. Smith is
having very nice time
indeed. I think she
has been able to collect
good many legends
[page 2]
besides other valuable
information.
Yesterday she bought
a [?] Pipe that was
given to the great chief
Sag – gra – [?] – sah in
1807, by the Baptist Mission in Mass. (I
could not spell the
name) You will no
doubt see it in Boston
at your meeting.
Mrs Smith is going
to take an Indian girl
home with her, a
cousin of mine who is
here on a visit. I very
much fear some Pale
faced Indian will
fall in love with her
for she is quite attractive
[page 3]
besides a very good singer.
Mrs Smith had a [?]
[?] [?] Powell that
he was [aiming?] & she must
remain until he comes
but we do not know what
day he will arrive.
I hope you will have
splendid time [?] west
and that you will come
home well. I would
like to hear from you
while you are gone, how
ever I shall not be offended
if you do not write, as I
am very well [?]
that your time will be
fully occupied. You would
never remember poor me
so good bye and may
the “Great eye” of the
“Great Spirit watch
over you, and guide
[page 4]
Your safe return
to your home & to loved
ones is the wish of
Your Friend
Carrie G Mt. Pleasant
P.S. Mrs Smith sends
regards & is very
sorry she can not see
you or [?]
My husband also
wishes to be remembered.
